Introduction

The following "Cyberproofed?" program implementation guidelines are included for your consideration. These are based upon methodologies proven to be successful within the Region of Peel District School Boards.

        Purpose

The Internet Safety Program called "Cyberproofed?" has been designed to give students the necessary tools to help protect themselves from being victimized by predators on the Internet. Following these safety guidelines will also assist both students and adults from various other forms of victimization through the Internet.

"Cyberproofed?" is designed for students from grades 3-10 inclusive in three age-appropriate programs for grades 3-5, 6-8 and 9-10.

        Program Advantages

  1. "Cyberproofed?" has been designed to meet the Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum standards.
  2. The program does not rely upon the students' prior knowledge or experience on the Internet.
  3. The program may be integrated into the current curriculum. For example, at the elementary school level, certain tasks may be completed during Language Arts.
  4. The success of the learning process within the school system is significantly enhanced through collaboration between educators and police for the program delivery. The police presence has been identified as an important factor in reinforcing the Internet Safety message with students.

        SUGGESTED STEPS TO COMPLETION

It is recommended that the complete "Cyberproofed?" program be taught within a one week time-frame.

        System Level Pre-Implementation Process

  1. At a system level, assemble a Committee of representatives from the District School Board of Education and the Police Service in order to coordinate the delivery of "Cyberproofed?" to the students in a timely manner.
  2. If possible the committee should conduct meetings with school superintendents, principals and vice-principals so that administrators become aware of the goals, objectives and implementation recommendations for the program.
  3. Distribute at least one program package to each school. At a minimum, the package would consist of:
    1. "Cyberproofed?" Lesson Plans
    2. Internet Safety Video "Caught on the Web"
    3. "Internet Safety Introduction" video to provide teachers with an overview of the programs
    4. Family Contracts for each parent
    5. Internet Safety Guidelines for each parent
    6. Sample Powerpoint presentation to be given by the police officer (on computer disk). If this technology is not available, a second option would be to use overheads or slides.

Optionally, the packages may also contain support material to assist in reinforcing the message with the students. Within the Region of Peel, the support material currently consists of:
    1. Certificates of Completion for lower elementary grades
    2. Wallet Cards of Completion for upper elementary grades
    3. Frisbees containing the Internet Safety Points (for grade 6 students)
    4. Mouse Pads containing the Internet Safety Points (for grade 3 students)

Note: Fundraising initiatives may be used to defray the costs to the optional support material.

        System Level Post Assessment

  1. An individual either from the District School Board of Education or from the Police Service should monitor the number of schools and students who have completed the program. This may include a post-assessment analysis to determine the success of the Internet Safety Program.
  2. The committee should review the program on a regular basis to ensure that it remains current with the advancing technology.

        School Level Implementation

  1. Elementary School Program Pre-Delivery:
    1. At the school level teacher meetings, the principal/vice-principal would discuss the implementation process with the teachers.
    2. Before the program is actually taught in a school, ensure that the school and Police have established a date and time for the assembly-format delivery by the Police Officer.
    3. Prior to the Police visit, the principal should ensure that the students have completed the previous tasks.
    4. Under ideal circumstances, the format for the delivery of the Police presentation should be with the use of PowerPoint or similar program (sample in package). During the assembly, the Police revicew the Internet Safety Points with the students, followed by Question and Answer.
    5. Upon completion of the program, the "Cyberproofed?" Guidelines and Family Contracts are delivered ot the parents through the school. Students may be given certificates of completion, mouse pads, frisbees or other support material to reinforce the message.

  2. Secondary School Program Pre-Delivery:
    1. At the school level teacher meetings, the principal/vice-principal would discuss the implementation process with the teachers.
    2. When the process is to begin, notify all schools of the time frames for the program delivery. Before the program is actually taught in a school, ensure that the Principal and Police have established a date and time for the assembly-format delivery by the Police Officer.
    3. Prior to the Police segment of the program, ensure that the officer has received the school profile through the results of the pre-program questionnaire.
    4. Under ideal circumstances, the format for the delivery of the Police presentation should be with the use of PowerPoint or similar program (sample in package). The Police begin the program by identifying school statistics about student Internet use, show the video and then host a question and answer period.
