Chief Metcalf commenced his career in policing on January 4th, 1971, with the Mississauga Police Department. During his policing career, he has been assigned to a number of areas, including the Criminal Investigation Bureau, Identification Services, the office of the Duty Inspector, the Morality Bureau and Superintendent in charge of 21 Division.
Mike Metcalf was promoted to the rank of Staff Superintendent in November 2001 and was initially Officer-in-Charge of Courts, Staff Services and Communications. In October 2002, he assumed responsibility for Field Operations, which includes all divisions in the Region and the Airport Division.
Chief Metcalf completed a number of police management and executive training courses at both the Ontario and Canadian Police Colleges, including the Senior Police Administration Course and the Executive Development Course. He is a past instructor at Sheridan College in the area of Criminalistics.
Chief Metcalf received the Medal of Bravery for his role during the Mississauga Train Derailment. He has received both the 20 and 30-year awards for exemplary service and recently received the Queen's Golden Jubilee medal.
Chief Metcalf was responsible for the introduction of the Automated Fingerprint Identification System and our Automated Mugshot Retrieval System in the early 90's. He was also responsible for the implementation of the Adequacy Standards Regulation in January 2001.
On January 1, 2004, Mike Metcalf became the Deputy Chief of Police. He served in that capacity until January 1, 2006 when he took over as chief of the Peel Regional Police.
